Abstract

Christians in Asia Minor were being challenged by some who claimed to know Christ, yet these opponents of the faith were not living like Jesus (1 John 2:18-19, 22-23; 4:1-3; ). John wrote so that his Christian readers in Asia Minor might know that they had eternal life (1 John 5:13). Building on the connection between obedience and relationship already made evident in the Gospel of John (John 14:15, 21; 15:10, 14), the apostle states that those who claim to love Christ must in turn obey Him. Even now Christians know we will sin, but we can also know that the Christ who sacrificed His life for us wants us to succeed (1 John 2:1-2). The world is a dangerous place that makes unstable promises, but Christians can have real security by walking with Christ in faith.
